Adding Positive Drainage to Your Flat Roof

With the Summer monsoon season beginning in New Mexico, many homeowners are becoming concerned about the condition of their roof, especially flat roofs.

At Right Way Roofing, we are asked all the time about ponding and pooling on flat roofs and how to fix the problem. Here in New Mexico, most of the older roofs are very close to being dead level and, in most cases, they hold water. For these homes, we highly recommend adding a slope to your roof to allow positive drainage, which will eliminate ponding. It’s important to note, the new slope to your roof will not change the aesthetics of your home, since the slope is not viewable from the ground.
In most cases, our roofers will remove your pre-existing roofing system prior to installing the new slope. Once the frame of the slope is constructed, we will add new decking and then install the roofing system of your choice.
After the slope is added to your roof, we recommend installing either a multi-layered fiberglass hot tar and gravel roofing system also known as a Built-Up Roof (BUR) or a single-ply modified bitumen roofing system.

At the end of the day, regardless of what roofing system you choose, the most important decision to make is which installer you work with. Even the best roofing material available can fail if it’s not properly installed. That’s why it’s important to hire a roofing contractor with the resources to complete a quality roofing replacement installation. At Right Way Roofing, we provide expert installers, state of the art equipment, and experience with the roofing material you want to install.
