Cleaning and Maintaining Your Roof for the Fall

It’s officially Fall here in New Mexico. Some would say it’s the best time of the year in Albuquerque with hot air balloons floating in the sky, the smell of green chile roasting in the air, and the weather is fresh and crisp. It is also the perfect time of year to get your roof and gutters cleaned from leaves and debris. If your home has gutters, it’s important to consider cleaning them out at least twice a year during the Fall and Springtime. Cleaning and maintaining your roof is something you shouldn’t procrastinate doing. In fact, you should have your gutters cleaned out even before they start to clog up.

Once the leaves start to change color and begin to fall off the trees there’s a good chance that they could end up in your gutters. You may not notice any signs of problems when the weather is dry, but once it rains or snows you could begin to experience issues. Rain cannot drain properly if your gutters are clogged with leaves and debris. When the clogging of gutters occurs, water can begin to pool and potentially cause damage to the walls, roof, fascia and even the foundation of your home.

Preparing your roof in the Fall will give you peace of mind in the Winter. If you don’t clean out all the debris on your roof and gutters in the Fall, you run the risk of all that material freezing during the Wintertime. Frozen debris in your gutters makes it even harder for melting water from snowfall to drain properly. The water has nowhere to go and can seep through the roof, which can cause major water damage. The uncollected debris also gets heavier once it freezes and that extra weight on your gutters or roof could lead to holes or sagging.

All these reasons are why preventative maintenance of your gutters is incredibly important to keep your home in good shape going into the Winter.
