Does your roofer have the right type of insurance?

It is important when you hire a contractor to do work at your home or business that they are fully covered with the proper and required insurance. By law, every contractor must have a worker’s compensation policy in place. Workers compensation is an insurance policy that protects the employee from injury at a jobsite. If your roofing contractor does not have a legitimate workers comp. policy in place and the employee hurts themselves on your property, you might be liable for their injury. There have been cases where the homeowner has had to pay thousands of dollars of their own money for the workers injury, all because the roofing contractor they hired did not have workers compensation insurance.

Another insurance to make sure your roofing contractor has is general liability insurance. General liability insurance is a policy that protects the employee and homeowner in case of a work-related accident or damage done to your home. For example, when getting your roof replaced a fire breaks out and your home burns down or there is water damage due to a plumbing issue, the contractor’s general liability insurance would cover the damage done. If your roofer does not have the proper liability insurance, it would come down on you to pay for the damage done.

The last insurance policy we recommend you check for is truck insurance. Many roofing companies use large dump trucks when repairing or replacing a roof. If the trucks are not insured properly and for example one of the large dump trucks hit your home or damaged another vehicle at the property, you may be responsible for paying for the damage done on your property.

Making sure your roofing contractor has the right insurance is critical when hiring for your roofing project. Hiring an unqualified and uninsured family member, friend or neighbor to repair your roof is extremely risky not only because your roof might not be properly fixed but also because you could be paying a lot more money in the case a work related accident happens on your property.
