Is Your Roof the Only Thing that Keeps Water Outside of Your Home? Let’s Talk Stucco.

Many people are unaware that sealing the top of your parapets with stucco is just as important as replacing your roof. A reputable roofing company, like Right Way Roofing, will always make recommendations when repairing your roof if they notice cracked or broken stucco especially at the top of your parapets. The typical life span of your stucco is fifteen to twenty years, which is similar to the lifespan of your roof. Therefore, it is a good idea to plan on getting your stucco repaired in conjunction with a new roof.

During the colder months, moisture can penetrate small cracks in your parapet wall stucco and freeze and then thaw, which breaks up the stucco even more. The process repeats over and over and soon you’ve got a problem which is very costly to fix. During the warmer months, the intense heat and sun damage can lead to cracks forming on your parapet walls, which causes moisture to penetrate and erode the stucco leading to leaks during our monsoon season.

We highly recommend you have stucco work done by a local professional stucco company after installing a new roof. It is important to remember to have the stucco repaired after the re-roof is completed. This allows the stucco to overlap, or counter flash, your roofing material providing a tight seal to keep moisture out. Parapets are not the only areas that need attention, but also chimneys and any other stucco areas that meet the roofing material.

Keep in mind, a roof will keep most of the water out of your house but other components, especially the stucco, will help keep your home and your valuables safe as well. Consider replacing or repairing your stucco while replacing or repairing your roof.
